I set myself a goal at the begining of the summer: 3 new songs written, recorded and in the can. I’d become lazy and it was time to turn things around. What came as a plesant surprise was that each new song I worked on ended up being a collaboration.
The first of these projects came about in an unusal way. Robert Hengeveld, an artist friend of mine, was exhibiting one of his latest pieces and asked if would contribute a song. The project, titled “Staging the Gap”, features a miniature stage, decked out with working lights and smoke, all programmed in a visual sequence. In addition there are eight headsets, each featuring a different musical interpretation of the show.
I worked on the song with Tyrone Warner, a really talented writer and musician. The result was An Accident By The Waterfront. The song is a real departure for me in terms of sound and it was a lot of fun putting together.
The second song to be completed was Thank You. My brother-in-law Dion Oxford brought the lyrics and I brought the riff. The two parts came together at a cottage during some vacation time. When it came to recording, Ian Cusson stepped up to add some sweet keys to tie it all together.
The third little diddy is still in the vault. I will give you a little teaser though...the working title is “Cranberry Juice.” Tell me that doesn’t have
No. 1 written all over it!
